How it feels to be a finance worker and a very proud member of the JDA

I’ve read the JEP letter tonight by Sean Kelly – at least I think that’s what his name was – basically just having a go at Deputy Southern and about how the poor are being shafted. Are the poor being shafted? Damn right they are?

I’d like to talk about how, when the Health Insurance Exemption scheme was transferred into income support, those who used to benefit from being on the scheme suddenly found themselves having this drastically cut.

About how many people on low wages and incomes have rotting teeth because they cannot afford to go to the Dentist and are letting their health go because they can’t afford the Doctor.

About my friend who was on disability benefit and calculates that, under the new system, she will be about £500 pounds a year worse off. She knows of many who are in a worse situation and counts herself as one of the lucky ones!

About how many of the islands elderly population worry about paying food and heating bills.

About how, according to UK standards, 1 in 5 states housing properties are not up to scratch.

Yes, I work in the finance industry – albeit as a messenger – no £35K+ wage for me – and I fully appreciate the huge benefits that it brings. But it must pay its way as the rest of our rich residents must pay their way. That is all I ask. That everyone pays their way.

I also know that many in the industry, like me, are worried about the direction this island is taking.

I believe that we are ready for change and that the JDA’s politicians are among the few who try their absolute best to work for EVERYONE who needs their help.

So get this out among your friends. The JDA is intent on creating a better, fairer future and needs your help to bring this about. There is so much that is good about Jersey – together we can begin to sort out the things that aren’t. Get in touch!
